Someday is not a Day of the Week

Someday is not a Day of the Week

My kids sat looking at me with huge eyes. Here I was stopped in the middle of a children's book sobbing. "Someday is Not a Day of the Week", that book absolutely broke me. In the book each time the child asked to do something with his Mother, Father or Grandfather he was told "Someday". The book follows Max as he investigates the calendar and realizes that Someday is not one of the days listed, which means someday is not going to happen.

It is a simple book meant to stir parents into realizing they need to spend time now, and perhaps it chides parents for their busy and inaccurate answers to small children's ears. That is all well and good, but what if your an adult who's someday never came? What if you are a grown adult that only had the offers of tomorrow but no tomorrow materialized? What if your parent is already gone and you never got to the promised "someday"? I have more than one friend who have buried a parent that they never had that special relationship with. They were always waiting to feel the love, to be affirmed or to experience the parent/child relationship they know some people enjoy. This hits like a hammer, when time is up and you never had your SOMEDAY. Or when you are living everyday with the knowledge that despite your best efforts your parent will never respond to you how you need/want/wish for them to.

This is a stifling hurt, it is a hurt that we tell ourselves we have "out grown", that we have "talked out", or that it doesn't "bother us anymore". In the words of another children's author Dr. Suess, "we say and say and say those words. We say them, but we lie them". After my friend's father passed away I wrote him a letter. I said these are things that are true about you, that your father should have told you, and I am sorry he never did, you are amazing. It was a nice gesture, but I am sure it did not stop his pain.

Why am I saying all this and perhaps bringing you down? I do it because "Someday is not a Day of the Week, and if you are waiting for your someday, if you need your someday, how are you going to do if your "someday" just never makes it to you? I know there are many of you out there who have deep parental hurt. Your day when that pain is lifted may come, but it also may not. Your parents may pass away without even saying or doing the things you so deeply need.

Do not live your entire life waiting for an identity or a stamp of approval that may never come. Live out of the approval, love, acceptance and identity you already have.
